AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification Complete Study Guide for 2026

When I was training a batch of freshers last year in Hyderabad, one of them — a 2024 B.Tech graduate who had never touched a cloud console in his life — asked me, “anna, which certification should I start with?” Without thinking twice, I said AWS Cloud Practitioner. Three months later, he cleared the exam and landed a support engineer role at a mid-sized IT company in Bangalore with a CTC of ₹4.2 lakhs. That story is why I keep pushing this certification to every beginner who walks into the cloud space.

So in this aws cloud practitioner certification guide 2026, I cover everything you need — what the exam actually tests, how long to study, what resources to use, and the mistakes I’ve seen students make over and over again.

What Is the AWS Cloud Practitioner Exam?

The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, currently on its CLF-C02 version, is the entry-level certification from Amazon Web Services. Instead, it’s not a technical deep-dive — think of it as a broad overview of what AWS is, how cloud computing works, and how businesses use it. You don’t need to write code or configure complex architectures to pass this exam.

Here are the basics you need to know before you register:

  • Exam code: CLF-C02
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Number of questions: 65 questions (scored + unscored)
  • Passing score: 700 out of 1000
  • Cost: $100 USD (roughly ₹8,300 at current rates)
  • Format: Multiple choice and multiple response
  • Validity: 3 years

You can check the AWS official exam page for the most up-to-date information on scheduling and prerequisites. The good news — there are no official prerequisites. Even a complete beginner can attempt it, which is exactly why it’s so popular in India right now.

What Are the AWS Cloud Practitioner Exam Domains and Weightages?

Surprisingly, this is something a lot of AWS Cloud Practitioner students skip over and then regret during preparation. However, the CLF-C02 exam is divided into four domains, and each has a specific weightage. As a result, knowing this helps you spend your study time wisely instead of reading everything equally.

Domain Domain Name Weightage
Domain 1 Cloud Concepts 24%
Domain 2 Security and Compliance 30%
Domain 3 Cloud Technology and Services 34%
Domain 4 Billing, Pricing, and Support 12%

Notice how Cloud Technology and Services takes up 34%? Consequently, that’s where most of your time should go. Skipping security and compliance would be a big mistake too — 30% is not a small chunk. I’ll talk more about each domain below.

How Long Does It Take to Prepare for the AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification?

Honestly, it depends on your background. For someone with zero IT background — say a BCA fresher or someone switching from a non-technical field — I usually say 4 to 6 weeks of consistent daily study (2–3 hours a day). If you already work in IT or have some networking or basic tech knowledge, you can probably be ready in 3 weeks.

I’ve seen both ends of the spectrum. For instance, one student from my batch crammed everything in 10 days and passed. On the other hand, another one studied for 3 months and still failed the first attempt because he was reading theory without doing any practice questions. Ultimately, the timeline matters less than how you study.

A rough weekly breakdown that works well:

  • Week 1: Start with cloud concepts, the AWS global infrastructure, and core services overview
  • Then in Week 2: Move to IAM, security services, and the shared responsibility model
  • By Week 3: Cover compute (EC2, Lambda), storage (S3, EBS), databases (RDS, DynamoDB), and networking basics
  • Next, Week 4: Focus on billing and pricing, support plans, and the pricing calculator
  • Finally, Weeks 5–6: Take full-length practice exams, review weak areas, and go through AWS whitepapers

What Are the Best Free Study Resources for AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification in 2026?

Chudandi — you don’t need to spend a single rupee on courses if you’re resourceful. Luckily, there are genuinely good free resources available, and I’ve personally vetted most of these with my students.

AWS Skill Builder

AWS Skill Builder (skillbuilder.aws) has a free Cloud Practitioner Essentials course that is actually made by AWS itself. It covers all four domains in a structured way with short video modules. Because of this, it should be your primary learning resource. The free tier is enough — you don’t need the paid subscription for CCP prep.

FreeCodeCamp on YouTube

Similarly, there’s a full-length AWS Cloud Practitioner course on the FreeCodeCamp YouTube channel that’s several hours long and completely free. It’s one of the most-watched cloud certification courses on YouTube and it’s genuinely good. I recommend watching it at 1.25x speed and pausing to take notes on services.

AWS Official Documentation

Also, for specific services, the AWS official documentation (docs.aws.amazon.com) is surprisingly readable for foundational topics. You don’t need to read everything — just the FAQs for key services like S3, EC2, IAM, and RDS. In particular, those FAQ pages are gold for exam prep.

AWS Whitepapers

Finally, two whitepapers are absolutely essential for the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam: the AWS Well-Architected Framework whitepaper and the Overview of Amazon Web Services whitepaper. They’re free, they’re available on the AWS website, and questions directly from these documents appear on the exam. Don’t skip them.

If you want a broader list of no-cost learning options, I’ve put together a separate guide on free IT certification resources that covers more than just AWS.

What Are the 5 Must-Know AWS Cloud Practitioner Exam Topics?

1. Cloud Concepts (Domain 1 — 24%)

This domain covers the “why” of cloud — the six advantages of cloud computing, the three deployment models (public, private, hybrid), and the three service models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS).

In addition, you also need to understand the AWS global infrastructure: regions, availability zones, and edge locations. Although these feel basic, exam questions can be tricky — they often test whether you understand the difference in a scenario context, not just a definition.

2. Security and Compliance (Domain 2 — 30%)

Most importantly, the Shared Responsibility Model is the single most important concept in this domain. Specifically, AWS is responsible for security “of” the cloud, while the customer is responsible for security “in” the cloud.

Beyond that, you need to know IAM thoroughly — users, groups, roles, policies, MFA. Understanding AWS IAM best practices will help you in both the exam and actual cloud work. Additionally, cover AWS Shield, AWS WAF, CloudTrail, and compliance programs like GDPR and HIPAA on AWS.

3. Cloud Technology and Services (Domain 3 — 34%)

This is the biggest AWS Cloud Practitioner domain and it covers the most ground. Therefore, focus on: EC2 (instance types, pricing models), S3 (storage classes, lifecycle policies), RDS vs DynamoDB, Lambda (serverless concept), VPC basics, CloudFront, and Elastic Load Balancing.

Importantly, you don’t need deep technical knowledge — you need to know what each service does, when you’d use it, and how it roughly works. Scenario-based questions are common here.

4. Billing, Pricing, and Support (Domain 4 — 12%)

Although this has a small weightage, it offers easy marks if you prepare well. Know the four support plans (Basic, Developer, Business, Enterprise), the AWS Pricing Calculator, AWS Cost Explorer, AWS Budgets, and the concept of Reserved Instances vs On-Demand vs Spot pricing. Furthermore, the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) calculator question also comes up occasionally.

5. AWS Well-Architected Framework

This AWS Cloud Practitioner topic cuts across domains. The six pillars — Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency, Cost Optimization, and Sustainability — are tested directly. So make sure you know what each pillar means and which AWS services support each one. This was the source of three questions in one of my student’s exam attempts last year.

What Mistakes Do AWS Cloud Practitioner Students Make During Preparation?

I’ve watched enough students prepare (and fail) to see patterns. Here are the ones that come up again and again.

Mistake 1: Reading without doing practice questions

For example, one student from Vizag — bright guy, read everything — failed his first attempt with 650 because he had never done a single practice test. He knew the concepts but wasn’t used to how AWS frames questions.

As a result, practice tests are not optional for the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam. Do at least 200–300 practice questions before sitting the real exam. ExamTopics has a free community-sourced question bank that many students use.

Mistake 2: Ignoring the whitepapers

Unfortunately, this is extremely common among AWS Cloud Practitioner candidates. Many students watch videos, skip the whitepapers, and then wonder why they’re getting confused on questions about the Well-Architected Framework or cloud economics.

In contrast, the videos give you the foundation, but the whitepapers give you the language AWS uses in exam questions. Therefore, at minimum, skim the two whitepapers I mentioned above.

Mistake 3: Memorising instead of understanding

Especially with IAM and the Shared Responsibility Model — bhai, you can’t just memorise the table. The exam will give you a scenario and ask “whose responsibility is this?” You need to actually understand the logic, not just have it memorised. That is why I always tell my students to explain it to someone else. After all, if you can teach it, you’ve understood it.

Mistake 4: Not checking the official exam guide

Importantly, AWS publishes an official exam guide PDF for CLF-C02 on their certification page. It lists every topic that can be tested.

However, some students prepare based on old blog posts or outdated courses without cross-checking against the current AWS Cloud Practitioner exam guide. Since the CLF-C02 version has some differences from the older CLF-C01, always align your prep with the current guide.

What Should You Do After Passing the AWS Cloud Practitioner Exam?

Clearing the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam is a good start — it proves you understand the fundamentals and it gives your resume a boost, especially if you’re a fresher. But on its own, CCP doesn’t significantly move the salary needle. In India, CCP holders in entry-level cloud support roles typically earn anywhere from ₹3.5 to ₹5.5 lakhs per year depending on the company and city.

The natural next step is the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03). This is where things get interesting from a career and salary perspective. SAA-C03 holders in India — especially those with 1–2 years of experience — can earn significantly more. If you want to understand what that career trajectory looks like in INR, check out this detailed breakdown of AWS Solutions Architect salary in India.

In addition, some students ask me if they should skip the AWS Cloud Practitioner and go straight to SAA-C03. My honest answer: if you have zero cloud background, don’t skip CCP. The foundation it builds makes SAA-C03 preparation much smoother. If you already work in IT with some networking or Linux knowledge, skipping is reasonable.

Beyond SAA-C03, the associate-level certifications — Developer Associate and SysOps Administrator — are also valuable paths depending on whether you lean toward development or operations. And if you’re exploring other certification paths, this guide on the best IT certifications for beginners gives a broader picture of what’s worth your time and money in 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam hard?

For someone with no IT background, the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam can feel overwhelming at first — but it’s considered one of the easier cloud certifications. With 4–6 weeks of focused preparation using the right resources, most people pass on their first attempt. The pass rate is not officially published by AWS, but anecdotally it’s considered manageable for well-prepared candidates.

How much does the AWS CCP exam cost in India?

Currently, the exam fee is $100 USD, which works out to approximately ₹8,300 at current exchange rates. AWS occasionally offers a free practice exam voucher with certain training completions on Skill Builder. There’s also a 50% discount voucher available after completing certain free AWS training paths — worth checking before you register.

Can I clear the AWS CCP exam with only free resources?

Yes, absolutely. AWS Skill Builder (free tier), the FreeCodeCamp YouTube course, AWS official documentation, and the free whitepapers are more than enough for the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam. In fact, you don’t need to buy any paid course for CCP. The only thing I’d add is a free practice test platform like ExamTopics to test yourself before the real exam.

How many times can I retake the AWS CCP exam if I fail?

Fortunately, AWS allows retakes, but you must wait 14 days before retaking after a failed attempt. While there’s no limit on the number of attempts, each attempt costs the full $100 fee. Additionally, if you fail, AWS provides a score report showing which domains you were weak in — use that to guide your re-preparation.

Does the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification expire?

Yes. AWS certifications are valid for 3 years from the date you pass. After that, you need to recertify — either by passing the same exam again or by passing a higher-level certification in the same domain, which automatically renews the lower-level cert as well.

Is CCP worth it for experienced IT professionals?

If you’re already working in IT with several years of experience, the AWS Cloud Practitioner might feel too basic. Consequently, most experienced folks skip straight to SAA-C03. But if your employer requires it as a baseline for cloud projects, or if you’re completely new to AWS despite having other IT experience, CCP is a quick and structured way to get familiar with the AWS ecosystem before going deeper.
